Hairstyles with Bangs - What You Need to Know Before Going with the Fringe Look

Bangs are bold, beautiful and back in style. Even though plenty of women have recently adopted the long-dormant fringe look, we know that making the change to bangs can be daunting. If you’re looking into hairstyles with bangs but aren’t sure if the look is right for you, you’re not alone. To help you decide, here are the answers to some questions about the fringe look that we hear a lot from our guests.

To Fringe or Not to Fringe – Five Questions to Decide if Bangs are Right for You

Is now the right time to go with a fringe hairstyle?

Bangs are definitely back en vogue right now, but the fringe style works best during certain times of the year. During warmer summer months, the fringe style can be difficult to maintain. Humidity and the resulting sweat wreaks havoc on different hair types – fine hair goes flat, curly hair blows out and wavy hair poofs up. But the arrival of fall means there are plenty of cooler months ahead, making it an ideal time to lock down your fringe look.

Which fringe cut should I go with?

There’s no shortage of fringe haircuts to choose from. When determining the right fringe cut for you, base your decision on factors like your face shape, hair texture and desired hair length.

The best fringe cut for your facial shape will use your bangs to frame your positive features and make your face appear more oval. For example, if you have a square face, you should opt for a softer fringe style that’s longer around the temples or go with a side-swept look. You’ll want to avoid blunter fringe styles that cut hard across your forehead as these will make your face appear boxier.

If you have fine or thin hair, you may want to go with a lighter fringe to make sure there’s enough weight for the hair to stay in place. If you have thicker hair, embrace a heavier fringe to avoid thinning your hair for lighter styles like the baby bang.

Before you go with a fringe cut, talk to your hair stylist to see what kind of bangs they would recommend for your hair and facial shape.

How do I style my bangs?

Once you find the right fringe cut for you, you’ll need to learn how to style your bangs. Unfortunately, bangs tend to have a mind of their own and are notoriously tricky to style. If you’re not a fan of spending a lot of time styling your hair, the fringe look might not be the right choice for you.

If you’re comfortable with putting in the extra effort, there are ways to rein in your bangs. For most fringe looks, the styling process starts while your hair is still wet as you’ll lose control if it dries on its own. Start by blow drying your hair down and across your forehead. Use a flat brush to get your bangs to settle the way you want, then use some light-to-medium styling mousse on your still-damp hair to set the look.

What products are best for hairstyles with bangs?

Like many hairstyles, perfecting the fringe look is all about using the right tools. Bangs can be unruly but with the right products, you should be able to master the style in no time.

Products for washing your bangs

You don’t have to switch up your shampoo or conditioner, but you’ll want to supplement them with a few other products when you go fringe. Bangs tend to absorb the oil and sweat from your face which can cause your hair to clump up or stick flat to your forehead. To keep your bangs looking fantastic, grab some dry shampoo to refresh your hair throughout the day without getting it wet.

Products for styling your bangs

To style your bangs, we recommend using a flat paddle style brush and/or a flat iron. To set the look in place, we mentioned using styling mousse above but there are a few other options like Fantastic Sams’ Finishing Spray. This product is great especially if you need a firm, flexible hold that’s resistant to humidity.

How often do I need to trim my bangs?

This varies depending on how fast your bangs grow but a good rule of thumb is to trim your bangs every four to six weeks. Ask your stylist to trim your bangs around the facial feature you’re trying to frame and lighten up the ends so they lie naturally on your face.
