If you’re a regular reader of our blog, you probably saw our post last week on tips to help guys keep their hair healthy during the winter. The post has a lot of healthy hair tips that apply to women as well like:
- Washing your hair less often to keep it from drying out
- Using oils to moisturize your scalp
- Sticking to a healthy diet and exercise regimen
For the most part, however, men have it a lot easier when it comes to haircare than women. While last week’s post was a solid intro for keeping your hair healthy during the winter, it was more of a 101 course. In this week’s post, we’ll dive into some more advanced haircare tips. (Think of this like a graduate-level reading to keeping your hair healthy during the winter.)
Five advanced healthy hair tips for winter
The main reason why winter conditions are so rough on your hair is a one-two punch of cold outside weather combined with dry indoor heat. This combination can lead to split ends, breakage and other damage. There are, however, several steps you can take to keep your hair hydrated during the winter.
No. 1: Use the right conditioner
Have you noticed that your hair tends to be extra staticky during the winter? Those free-floating strands of hair sticking out from your scalp are a tell-tale sign of dryness. To help combat this, switch to a conditioner specifically designed to moisturize your hair follicles.
Our Moisturizing Conditioner is fantastic for dealing with dry, brittle hair and is incredibly easy to incorporate into your daily hair care routine. For maximum hydration, just apply the conditioner after shampooing and massage evenly into your hair from root to end. Let the conditioner sit in your hair for a minute or so before rinsing it out with warm (but not too warm) water.
No. 2: Don’t go out with wet hair
Your hair is most vulnerable to dry conditions when it’s wet or damp. Wet hair can get really cold in frigid temperatures in a matter of seconds. And when you’re hair is cold, it expands which puts it at risk for breakage. If you shower in the morning, make sure to allow plenty of time for it to completely dry before going outside.
No. 3: Protect your hair when going outside
When you leave the warm comfort of your home to venture into the harsh winter weather, it’s extremely important to make sure you protect your hair. To keep your hair shielded, try wearing a scarf or a loose fitting hat. For extra credit, you can also line your hat with silk or satin. This will protect your hair from coarse fabrics like wool and cotton that most winter hats are made of.
No. 4: Use caution when styling your hair
If you do plan to leave the house in the winter, styling your hair is still somewhat of a necessary evil. Depending on the method(s) you choose, styling your hair can wreak havoc on your locks. While you may be used to blow drying your hair to start the styling process, it’s actually better to let it air dry. Also, wait until it’s fully dry before you start doing your hair to avoid damaging the follicles while they’re at their most vulnerable.
No. 5: Apply a serum before styling your hair
If you’re worried about striking a balance between keeping your hair healthy and actually getting to work on time in the morning, try using our Nourishing Serum. When applied to damp hair, our Nourishing Serum drastically reduces the time it takes for your hair to dry. Formulated with Argan oil, our serum is also fantastic for adding moisture and shine to your hair while reducing frizziness. Simply squeeze a couple of drops into your hands and apply the serum throughout your hair after you shower. Once the hair is dry, you’re ready to start styling.
Bonus tip: Keep your hair trimmed
