Curly hair can be beautiful, but it can also be extremely difficult to style just right. In fact, a frizz-free blow-out can be an all-out battle. But, if you want to perfect your curls, there’s no need stress out. Just check out these tips to style your hair like a pro and get flawless curls that you’ll love.

Prepare your arsenal

If you have oily skin, you wouldn’t use a moisturizer designed for dry skin, right? When it comes to hair, it’s just as important to use the right tools and products.

Tools of the trade

The humble hair dryer has come a long way, but today’s models still aren’t all created equally. The right dryer can make a big difference in locking down the perfect curls. For the best results, curly girls should stick to ceramic or tourmaline blow dryers. Both emit negative ions which are more effective at busting up and scattering water’s positively charged ions. Plus, ionic dryers close the cuticle, making hair appear smoother and more polished.

A diffuser (that round attachment with prongs that came with your hair dryer) is a must. If your dryer didn’t come with one, you’ll want to get one pronto. This little gadget is a frizz-fighting wonder that helps give your curls shape and definition by drying evenly for a fuller, more uniform look.

Shampoo, conditioner, leave-ins and deep treatments

For the best curls, start by choosing the right shampoo and conditioners. Look for products that are specially formulated for curly hair and are sulfate- and alcohol-free. Sulfates create frizz and alcohol dries out your hair. That’s no good for anyone, but curly hair is especially prone to dryness since it takes longer for natural oils to travel down the length of the hair from the scalp.

For luxe curls, it’s extremely important to condition. For added hydration, try a leave-in conditioner made for curly hair to help lock in moisture. Pro tip: look for one with a built-in heat protectant to kill two birds with one stone.

To help keep your curls beautiful, apply a deep conditioning treatment weekly. Deep conditioning fights frizz, helps repair damage and moisturizes to reduce breakage, prevent split ends and improve the overall health of your hair.

Hair mousse, gel and serums

To help your curls keep their shape, apply a mousse or gel to wet hair when styling. If you’re looking for a new product, Fantastic Sams Curl Defining Creme pulls double duty by enhancing and accentuating curls while also strengthening and smoothing for an incredible shine. To style, apply a small amount of product to damp hair and distribute it evenly from roots to ends. Then, scrunch and squeeze your hair upward toward your scalp. Whichever product you choose, be sure to only use about a dime-size amount, or you’ll end up with crunchy hair that looks straight out of the 1980s.

For a smooth and shiny finish, you can also apply a tiny bit of argan oil, jojoba oil or hair serum. Our Nourishing Serum is a great choice for adding shine while reducing frizz and fly-aways. Plus, it substantially reduces hair drying time. What’s not to love about that?

Get down to business

Now that you know what you need, follow these steps to blowdry your curls like a pro.

Remove excess water from your hair

The coarse fibers of a regular towel can snag and tear delicate hair. Instead, use a clean t-shirt, microfiber towel or a towel made specifically for hair drying to help prevent breakage. Gently squeeze and pat your hair until it’s no longer sopping wet.

Detangle and apply hair mousse or gel and serum

Use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to gently work out any tangles. Start at the ends of your hair and work your way up to the roots. Then, apply a mousse or gel described above, followed by a bit of serum if you like.

Divide and conquer

Part your hair down the middle of your head and make a clean, neat bun on each side (if your hair’s really thick, you may need more than one per side). Secure with bobby pins, barrettes, pins or ponytail holders. Pull the back section of your hair into a ponytail or leave it down.

Dry with low heat

Tackle the most visible parts of your hair first – the temples, hairline and crown, then move backward toward the nape. Attach the diffuser and select the low heat setting on your dryer. Unpin one of your top sections of hair and apply the diffuser to the roots. Keep the dryer moving to avoid concentrating heat in one spot for too long. Let delicate ends air dry as long as possible as they’re more likely to become over-dried and frizzy with the heat. Repeat this process until all sections are dry.

Maximize volume and shine

The cool shot is great for sealing the cuticle to help lock in curl and add shine. Turn your dryer to the cool setting, flip your head over and place the diffuser at the roots of the hair at the nape of your neck. For maximum lift, move the diffuser in small circular motions working all the way around your head.

And there you have it: a head full of frizz-free, bouncy, fantastic-looking curls.
