How to Choose the Best Hair Color
Fall is a transitional season. From the changing color of the leaves to the new fashion trends, fall is about change. So, if you are yearning for a new look, Fall is in the hair and *The FS Color Event is going on now at participating Fantastic Sams Cut & Color. Check out these tips to choose the best hair color and fall for color.
First things first, find a room with optimal lighting—preferably a window-lit room that’s flooded with natural light. Avoid harsh fluorescents as these will only highlight any blemishes or imperfections and alter the true undertones of your skin (eek!).
Next, flip your wrist over. Check out those veins. If you notice that they're blue or purplish, you likely have cool undertones to your skin. If they’re greenish, you might have warmer, olive-toned skin. Are you somewhere in between? You probably have neutral undertones.
Now that you’ve determined your undertones, you're ready to choose the best color to flatter your complexion.
The general rule is to choose a hair color that is opposite from your skin's undertones.
So, those with warm undertones might opt for a cooler hair color, and those with cool undertones should choose warm shades. For the best hair color results, consult a professional and bring several pictures to show your hairstylist what you really want. If you decide to attempt a DIY box color, knowing your undertones is vital, or you could turn into a (brassy) pumpkin instead of the golden blonde bombshell that's pictured on the box.
If you have warm skin undertones, your skin will be peachy, yellow, or golden. The best hair color for warm tones is actually the opposite: cool shades, such as platinums and ashes. Ask your stylist for colors that are cool and natural.
Do you have cool undertones? Then your skin will have a pink, red, or blue hue. The most flattering hair color for cool tones is the opposite: warm shades, such as golden blondes, honey browns, auburns, caramels, and coppers. Avoid cooler shades, such as ashes. Ask your stylist for colors that are warm and golden.
You may be thinking, “I pulled the short straw! Neutral must mean I’m doomed to dull shades.” You couldn’t be more wrong! If you have a neutral skin tone, then you can pull off just about any shade your heart desires. Ask your hair colorist to blend warm and cool tones using the balayage technique for a multidimensional look.
Whether you are warm, cool, or somewhere in between, the best hair color is the one that makes you feel fantastic inside and out. What are you waiting for? Go ahead; Fall for Color — and Always Be Fantastic!
