Guys, does this scenario sound familiar? You have a big day ahead of you, so you turn in early the night before. You wake up – you’re feeling good. You take a shower – you’re smelling good. You dress to impress – you’re looking good.

Then, you go to style your hair. You start rummaging around the bathroom for your favorite hair product. You check the cabinet next to the mirror, rifle through every drawer and dig around under the sink. Then you see the empty bottle in the trash and you remember that you ran out of product yesterday and neglected to buy more. Suddenly, you’re not feeling so hot.

The next time this happens to you, don’t freak out. All you need is a few items you can easily find around the house, a can-do attitude and our guide below to make your hair look as good as you felt when you woke up.

How to Style Men’s Hair Without Commercial Products

Your house is most likely littered with ingredients you can use to style your hair. Here are three effective DIY hair gels you can use in a pinch.

Gelatin

If you can’t make it to the store for some hair gel, raid your cupboards for some gelatin. The same components that make gelatin a delicious and buoyant dessert also make it an effective and sturdy alternative to commercial hair products.

Mix a teaspoon of the gelatin (ideally unflavored) with a cup of warm water until the gel completely dissolves. When it thickens, you’ll be able to use it to style your hair just like your regular product. However, this will take some time. So, if you’re in a hurry, read on for a couple quicker solutions.

Aloe Vera

Still have some Aloe Vera from that pool party last summer when you didn’t think you needed any sunscreen even though all your friends told you it was probably a good idea? Perfect. Aloe Vera isn’t just great for treating sunburns, the plant’s gel is also perfect for styling your hair.

This solution is ideal if you’re in a rush. Styling your hair with Aloe Vera doesn’t require any prep time: just squeeze the gel into the palm of your hand, apply it to your hair and style it the same way you would with your standard hair product.

Flax Seed

Some of you may already use flaxseed oil for its many health benefits like promoting healthier skin and nourishing your hair follicles. But, the Omega-3 fatty acids in flax seeds don’t just promote healthier hair when ingested, they can also improve the condition of your scalp when applied directly.

To use flax seed to style your hair, boil two tablespoons of flax seeds in a cup of water for 10 minutes. Then, strain the liquid into a clean container, let it cool a bit and it’s ready to go. You can even use what’s left of this natural hair product alternative for up to 10 days.
