Humidity and Hair: How to Deal

Along with the lazy and hazy days of summer inevitably comes the messy and frizzy days of hair. The hot and saturated air and humidity can wreak havoc on your locks. But, although it may seem hopeless, you don’t have to look like cotton candy until September. Read on for surprising ways you can safeguard your tresses from a frizzy fate, starting with your brush and shower routine.

Kill it with moisture

Your hair’s best chance against the weather starts with the products that you use before you style your hair. A leave-in conditioner can be your first line of defense against frizz. Moisture provides the best humidity resistance and the right shampoo and conditioner could tame your hair before you even step outside.  You can also ask your stylist about what deep conditioning methods would be good for your hair type.

Freeze out the frizz

There are some that swear a cold water rinse in the shower cures all, from holistic healing to hair health. Rinsing your hair with cooler water helps close the cuticle and gives locks a shiny gloss while keeping frizz to a minimum before you begin to style. Either way, the effort will give you a great way to cool off on a hot day before you pick up your blow dryer.

Dry the right way

Instead of rubbing your hair with a towel after washing, blot it gently to help keep the frizz at bay. In the most humid of conditions, sometimes it’s better to air dry, but if you do use heat to dry your hair, blow dry from the top down to tame any flyaways before they have a chance to come out. The right brush is also everything when it comes to summer hair styling. Using a boar-bristle brush helps tame frizz and distribute moisture across the hair cuticle.

Indulge in some oil

A tiny amount of hair oil applied with a conservative hand can go a long way in taming humidity havoc on your hair. Depending on your hair texture, there are many different kinds of oils to choose from. Work with your stylist to find one that keeps the frizz away without being too heavy and making your hair seem too greasy or limp. Our Style Prep 10 is an all-in-one treatment that can work wonders on your way to a smooth, gorgeous style.

Slick it back

On a particularly scorching day, you may not feel like putting in all the effort to keep your hair frizz-free. Use a humidity fighting product like our Nourishing Serum to slick it back in a bun or tight braid and to keep the ends of your hair healthy and free of breakage. Or give coconut oil a try. It can help with not only the flyaways but also improves the texture of your hair. You may not be able to escape the heat, but your hair can!

While the humidity can make daily primping more difficult, talk to your stylist about a different cut or style that’s easy to maintain without a lot of fuss that can look great after air drying or skipping a couple of shampoos. Enjoy the rest of the summer frizz-free.
