Shocking Things That Are Aging You

Shocking Things That Are Aging You

You already know that smoking ages you. You’re well aware that you should be getting 8 hours of sleep and drinking plenty of water. But did you know that you may also be doing some pretty common things every day that are aging you?

Let’s take a quick look at these shocking, everyday activities that are making you look older than you are:

Loading Up On Sugar

In addition to packing on the pounds, added sugar is literally aging you from the inside out.

An excessive amount of sugar in your diet can cause:

  • Skin discoloration

  • Sagging jowls

  • Crosshatch wrinkles

  • Deeper wrinkles

Thankfully, you can remedy these effects by simply cutting back. Eliminate sugary sodas from your diet and be sure that you’re paying attention to the sugar content in everything you eat. You may be surprised to learn how much sugar is in savory things like pasta sauce.

Sipping Through a Straw

Speaking of sugary sodas, one shocking thing that’s actually aging you is the straw that you use to sip on them.

While puckering up your lips around a straw isn’t quite as bad as puckering them up around a cigarette, the effects are still pretty noticeable.

If you want to avoid those tell-tale little lines around your lips for as long as possible, opt for a strawless cup whenever possible.

And it’s more than just your ageless beauty that’s at stake.

Year after year, the Ocean Conservancy finds that plastic straws are among the top ten pieces of trash collected on beaches around the world. By saying “no thanks” to plastic straws, you’re not only saving your face, you’re also saving the planet.

Sleeping Face Down

You should absolutely be getting an adequate amount of sleep each night. Most doctors recommend 8 hours, but the amount you need really depends on a number of personal factors. Some people require 9 or 10 hours a night to be at their peak. Others only need 7 to function well.

Regardless of how much sleep you get each night, you really need to be paying attention to the way you sleep.

Sleeping with your face on the pillow not only causes temporary creases, it also leads to more permanent wrinkles.

Can’t seem to keep your face off the pillow? Invest in a nice silk pillow. Cotton pillows snag on your skin, which can exacerbate that wrinkling effect; whereas, silk pillows allow your skin to slide gracefully around at night, preventing that same sort of wrinkling.

Wearing Your Hair Too Long

We often associate long hair with youth, but unless you have incredibly healthy, thick hair, your longer hair may be adding years to your look.

The most youthful, flattering haircuts are the ones that accentuate the natural health and vibrancy of your hair.

In addition to shaving years off of your look, cutting your hair shorter can also cut down on the time you need to style your hair in the morning. We don't know about you, but we personally love being able to hit the snooze button a couple of times in the morning.

It's a win-win: looking younger and simplifying your styling routine in one fell swoop.
