Stylish Hairstyles for Girls: How to Rock Some Fantastic Braids

Oh, braids. Such a versatile hairstyle. There’s French braids, Dutch braids, Cornrows, fishtail braids, waterfall braids… the list goes on. While you and your daughter may have learned how to braid hair years ago, there are always new styles to learn.
If you’re looking for a creative braided hairstyle to make sure your daughter looks fantastic all school year long, these tutorials are for you. We’ll cover three unique twists (see what we did there?) on the traditional braid.

Braided Hairstyles Tutorials

Fishtail Braids

This hairstyle takes a standard braid, doubles it, then adds fishtails for the perfect finish. And, fishtail braids only take a few minutes to style.

What you’ll need

  • Brush and comb
  • Elastic bands
  • Finishing spray

How to style fishtail braids

  1. Start by parting the hair down the middle and sectioning it into pigtails. Then, divide each pigtail into two strands instead of three like you would for a regular braid.
  2. Braid the hair by pulling one of the strands over the other section until you just about reach the ends.
  3. Finish the braid with an elastic band for the fishtail look at the end.
  4. Pull some of the strands out to stretch out the braid and give the style an intentionally messy look.
  5. Repeat for the other pigtail.
  6. Add a small amount of finishing spray to set the look.

Waterfall Braid

This style is elegant, trendy and a little whimsical. The waterfall braid will give her hair a cascading look that’s a little trickier to create. Don’t worry, just follow our step-by-step instructions below and you’ll have it down in no time.

What you’ll need

  • Curling iron (optional)
  • Brush and comb
  • Elastic bands
  • Hairpins
  • Texture powder
  • Finishing spray

How to style a waterfall braid

  1. If you want to give this style a flowy look, start by loosely curling the hair.
  2. Grab a section of hair on the right side and divide it into three strands. Take the piece of hair closest to the face, cross it over the middle strand and let it hang.
  3. Take the bottom piece, cross it over the new middle piece and leave it hanging down. This will give the look its waterfall effect.
  4. Take the top and bottom pieces and cross them over each other once.
  5. Repeat the previous two steps until the braid reaches the desired length.
  6. Finish the braid by twisting the two pieces together and securing them with an elastic band.
  7. Tuck your braid under the rest of her hair and secure it by crossing two bobby pins in an X shape.
  8. Sprinkle a small amount of texture powder throughout the braid.
  9. Repeat the braid on the left side of her head. Or, if you’re looking for a bolder style, leave the hair braided on just one side.
  10. Use hairspray to hold the look in place. We recommend our Fantastic Sams’ Finishing Spray – it’s fast drying, resistant to humidity and doesn’t leave any buildup or residue.

French Braid Turned Topknot

Whether you’re getting your daughter all done up for a formal event or just ready for school, the French braid turned topknot is a great style that works for a variety of occasions.

What you’ll need:

  • Brush and comb
  • Elastic bands
  • Finishing spray

How to style a French braid turned topknot

  1. Have your daughter flip her head over and then comb out her hair so it hangs straight down.
  2. With her head still upside down, create a French braid from the neck to the crown of the head.
  3. Use a hair tie to hold the braid in place, wrap the hair around the base of the braid and use a pin to secure it in place.
  4. Hold the look in place with a little bit of Fantastic Sams Finishing Spray
