3 Ways to Try Highlights for the First Time

Spring is just around the corner which means you might be in need of a color touch up after the holidays, or maybe you’re even thinking about lightening up your hair for the first time. If you’re new to color, highlights are the perfect way to play with a new look. Here are three types of highlight styles to ask your Fantastic Sams Cut & Color stylist about at your next appointment!

1. Partial Highlights – When you ask your stylist for partial highlights, they will use the traditional method of applying the color to the root of your hair. Compared to the coverage level of “full highlights” which would encompass your whole head, partial highlights are less of a commitment and are only applied to the top layer of hair showing.

2. Balayage – Even less of a commitment are balayage highlights. This is a freehand, natural-looking type of highlights that usually do not reach all the way to the root of the hair. Balayage (pronounced ball-ee-ah-g) is perfect for first timers or for anyone wanting a low-maintenance boost of color that looks like you’ve been kissed by the sun.

3. Shadow Root – Our third way to try highlights is by asking for a shadow root. This is a method where your FS stylist blends your natural hair color in with your highlights at the root. Shadow roots create a trendier look that needs less touch ups than traditional partial or full highlights. The blending at the root provides a more natural, less obvious look when your hair begins to grow out.

If we’ve convinced you that it’s time to add a little pop to your hair color and try highlights for the first time, be sure to talk with your local Fantastic Sams hairstylist about the best method of highlights for you!
